Manufacturing training for your factory workers

We’re opening up a new factory in northern Maine next year. We think our manufacturing business will do well there. Being close to the Canadian border will be an asset for transportation into Ontario and Quebec. We also like to think that we will be a benefit to the communities in that area. Other than forestry and farming, there’s not much else to do.

We have made some preliminary visits to the area and have been concerned with finding trained blue-collar workers when we get ready to hire. A solution seems to be supplying manufacturing training to good potential employees. We can get that started right away and have a trained work force when we get there. My nephew wants to come to work for me.

I think he would like to get his hands on my company someday, and I’m not opposed to that since my own sons are pursuing careers in medicine. However, he needs to start at the bottom to work his way to the top.

I told him he needs to take all the manufacturing training courses that he can get his hands on. While we deal here primarily with electronic components systems, I want him to be as knowledgeable in all areas as possible. Not only will he earn the respect of the other men, but he will be able to climb the rungs to the top faster.

When it comes to switching jobs, I much prefer the comfort of the position I am in. I know what to do and how to do it and am very happy in my own little niche.

The problem is that my job is becoming obsolete. My company will soon not need me in this capacity at all. Since I don’t want to end up out in the cold, I have been taking some manufacturing training courses by DVD. Each course is about a job task that this company will continue to need workers for. I’m not sure how long my current job will be in place, but I will definitely be ready to switch gears when that becomes necessary.
